Cardinals pick up pair of wins Saturday

The New Bremen baseball team got a pair of victories on Saturday, as the Cardinals defeated Fort Jennings 9-2, then completed a 5-2 win over Fort Recovery. The game against the Indians had been suspended due to rain and lightning on Friday.

In the game against Fort Jennings, Kyle Tenkman was the winner, pitching five innings. He allowed two runs on four hits and one walk. Reece Busse threw two innings, allowing one hit. Tenkman struck out one and Busse two.

Mitchell Hays and Vince Hulse each had a double and single. and Zach Bertke had two hits. Hulse and Bertke each drove in two runs, as did Wyatt Dicke. Tenkman and Colton Muether had RBIs also.

New Bremen scored in five of the seven innings, starting with three runs in the first. Hays led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a groundout, and scored on a hit by Bertke. Ben Blickle singled to left, moving Bertke to third. After Blickle stole second, Hlse doubled to left, scoring both.

The Musketeers got a run on two hits in the bottom of the first.

WIth two outs in the second, Hays doubled, then scored on a fly-ball single to center from Tenkman. Fort Jennings picked up a second run in the bottom half.

After a scoreless third, the Cards added three more runs in the fourth. Muether singled, got to second on a wild pitch, and a sac bunt put him on third. Dicke singled up the middle to bring him in. Dicke stole second, then scored on due to an errant throw after a bunt by Tenkman. A groundout brought Hays in to make it 7-2.

In the fifth, Hulse walked, then a balk and passed ball moved him to third. A groundout was enough to bring him across. The final run came on a sac fly by Dicke with Hulse scoring that time as well.

Against Fort Recovery, New Bremen got runs in the second, fifth and sixth to earn the win.

Hays (four innings) and Bertke (three) split the mound duties. Each gave up one run, with three hits off Hays and four against Bertke. Both hurlers walked one and struck out four.

Bertke also was 3-for-4 at the plate. Dicke had two hits. Nick Alig had a two-run double and Sam Sailer had two RBIs.

In the second inning, Bertke and Dicke each singled with two outs. Alig doubled to left to take the early lead.

Two hits and a sac bunt produced a run for the Indians in the bottom half.

New Bremen loaded the bases in the third, but was not able to score. In the fourth, Hays was hit by a pitch and got to second on a sac bunt by Blickle. Hays stole third, then he and Blickle scored on a hit by Sailer.

In the sixth, Bertke singled with one out. After a strikeout, Wells, Hays and Blickle were all hit by pitches, which forced Bertke across.

The Indians did score a run with two outs in the seventh before a groundout to third ended the game.
