Humane Society in need of a new roof

The Auglaize County Humane Society has a problem, one that’s been persisting the whole month.

“We are in need of a new roof on both buildings,” Deb Logan, manager of the shelter, said, referring to both the main building and the one behind it.

The leaking roof — which started within the last month — has gotten so bad there are puddles inside from where water fell in, and a couple of the roughly 65 cats and dogs actually had to be moved.

“We don’t want the animals to get wet,” she said.

The leaking isn’t just leaving the animals wet. The constant cleaning is taking time away from other tasks.

Her theory for the cause of the problem: age.

“This building is very old,” she said. “We moved into this building probably 25-30 years ago.”

The roof can’t be patched up either because shingles are worn down and there are multiple holes.

Getting a roof won’t be easy either, and the cost to replace the current ones is $20,000. Because the organization is a 501 c3 non-profit, that amount of money isn’t lying around.

After talking to a roofing contract, she’s hoping to have the money by Dec. 1 and get the roof on shortly afterwards.

“We want to get the roof on before bad weather and snow hits,” she said.

So Logan and her team have been running Raise the Woof — a donation campaign — over the last couple weeks in hopes of raising the money to hire contractors that can replace them. She’s hoping once work begins the roofs can be replaced in a weekend, but said she’d be fine with however long it takes the contractor to complete it.
