The connection between substance abuse and mental health

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and for those struggling with substance abuse, mental health often goes hand in hand with that struggle.

“A lot of times, people with substance abuse issues, also have mental health issues,” said Rachel Katterheinrich, Family Resource Center’s Clinical Supervisor for Auglaize County. The Family Resource Center held a Mental Health Awareness event on Monday to make the community more aware of mental health.

“In this office we serve children from three on up, and we have an outpatient therapy case management,” said Amy Miller, Site Director for Allen, Auglaize, and Hardin counties. When it comes to substance abuse, that can come in many forms, but the effects can be the same.
